How to Compare Two PDF Files for Text Differences
Review added and removed PDF text, understand page alignment and distinguish text comparison from a visual difference check.
Compare PDF Text shows wording differences between two PDFs. It extracts text from corresponding file pages and displays changes side by side. It is useful for reviewing revised reports and drafts with selectable text.
Choose the versions in order
- Choose the earlier PDF first and the revised PDF second, within 50 MB combined.
- Run the comparison and review removed and added text.
- Use the changed-pages filter if helpful, then inspect relevant pages in the original PDFs.
Example: a revised report
If page 3 changes a date from October 10 to October 12, inspect that text difference and its surrounding sentence. Verify numbers, punctuation and context against the original page rather than relying only on extracted text.
When a page was inserted
The comparison pairs page 1 with page 1, page 2 with page 2, and so on. A new cover shifts later content and can create many differences. It does not automatically align shifted pages. If appropriate, extract comparable sections from working copies first, keeping the source documents intact.
What a text comparison cannot show
An image, logo, font or layout can change without producing a text difference. Some metadata and page-size changes are reported, but this is not a pixel-level visual comparison. Use the PDF reader to review the appearance manually.
Scans and extraction errors
A scanned page may have no embedded text. English OCR can add a searchable layer to a copy; recognition mistakes can then appear as differences. Multi-column reading order can also differ. Check important wording in the page images.
