How to check whether a PDF is accessible

Accessibility checks help people using screen readers, keyboard navigation, zoom and high contrast settings.

Check selectable text

Confirm that the document has a real text layer and a useful language setting. Scanned images need OCR and a human review.

Review reading order

Headings, paragraphs, lists and tables should be read in a logical order. Decorative images need appropriate handling, and meaningful images need alternative text.

Check visual design

Use sufficient contrast, readable type and links that explain their destination. Test at 200% zoom and with keyboard navigation.
