How to redact sensitive information correctly

True redaction removes hidden text and data; drawing a black rectangle over text only hides it visually.

Make a copy first

Keep the original in a secure place and work on a copy. Identify every occurrence, including headers, attachments, comments and metadata.

Apply permanent redaction

Use a tool that removes the underlying content, then save a new file. Do not rely on a rectangle, highlight or annotation alone.

Test the output

Try searching for the redacted word, selecting the covered area and copying text. Inspect the document properties before sharing.
