How to add page numbers to a PDF
Page numbers make long documents easier to cite, print and navigate.
Choose the starting number
PDF page order starts at 1 even when the document has a cover page or printed numbering. Set the starting number that matches your reader’s context.
Choose a readable format
Use a plain number for a minimal look or “Page 1 of 10” when readers need the total length. Keep enough margin from the edge.
Preview before sharing
Check that numbers do not overlap existing footers, signatures or content.
