PDF/A vs normal PDF: what is the difference?
PDF/A is an archival profile designed for long-term preservation. A normal PDF is a general document format with fewer archival requirements.
Why PDF/A exists
PDF/A embeds or restricts dependencies such as fonts, encryption and external content so a file is more reproducible in the future.
When to choose PDF/A
Use it when an archive, regulator or records policy explicitly asks for PDF/A. It can be a poor fit for interactive forms, multimedia or workflows that need editing.
Check the requirement
PDF/A has multiple conformance levels. Verify the requested profile and validate the final file with an archival validator.
