PDF permissions explained

A PDF can restrict printing, copying or editing through permissions and encryption settings. These controls are not the same as a secure redaction.

Read the permissions

Look for whether printing, copying, commenting and form filling are allowed. A viewer may enforce these settings differently.

Know the limits

Permissions can discourage casual changes, but they are not a substitute for protecting confidential content. Do not remove restrictions unless you are authorized.

Test the recipient workflow

Open the final file in another viewer and confirm that the intended actions work without exposing content.
