How to split a PDF into 500 KB or 2 MB parts
Choose splitting or compression for an upload limit, check measured PDF parts and handle a page that is too large.
A size limit can apply to one attachment or to an entire submission. Check that rule first. Split to Upload Limit produces measured PDF parts; Compress PDF attempts to shrink one document.
When splitting helps
Use splitting when several attachments are allowed and their order can be kept. If a portal accepts a single file, splitting will not solve that requirement. Compression may help, but a chosen target size cannot be guaranteed.
Example: several attachments under 500 KB
- Choose a valid, unencrypted PDF within 50 MB and 300 source pages.
- Set the maximum size to
500KB. Here 500 KB means 500,000 bytes. - Process the file and check the size of each result. Consecutive source pages are grouped and every serialized part is measured.
- Download the individual PDFs. Check the last page of each part and the first page of the next part to confirm continuity.
For 2 MB parts, enter 2000 KB. This uses decimal units; match the destination’s stated requirement and leave headroom when its interpretation is unclear.
Measured example: four pages into two parts
Our synthetic example, generated on October 18, 2026, starts at 843,415 bytes. With a 500,000-byte limit, the measured outputs are 422,027 bytes for pages 1–2 and 422,030 bytes for pages 3–4. Both fit, and the page counts add back to four. The source contains deterministic payloads to make size boundaries visible; this is a splitting demonstration, not a real-world compression benchmark.
Download the source and two measured parts in a ZIP, or inspect the measurements. Unzip the source before trying it. For a 2 MB test, enter 2000 KB; this particular source is already smaller, so the tool returns the original unchanged.
Why a single page may still fail
If one page is larger than the limit, moving page boundaries cannot make it fit. Try compressing a copy and inspect small text before splitting again. Do not remove required information merely to meet a file limit.
The ZIP is not a size-limited PDF
The optional ZIP packages the parts together and can exceed your limit. A portal expecting PDF attachments usually needs the individual PDF files rather than the ZIP.
What splitting preserves and what to review
Pages are not rasterized. Document-level forms, bookmarks, tags and signatures may not survive splitting. Keep the originals, confirm page order and open every downloaded part before submitting.
