Image compression rebuilds pages as images. Preserve text and vectors attempts a structural rewrite while retaining selectable content; it may not reduce an already compact PDF.
A practical example
For a large scan, begin with Balanced and compare small text at normal reading size. For a text report that needs copy and search, try Preserve text and vectors first.
What to check in the result
A specific target such as 500 KB cannot be guaranteed by compression. Split to Upload Limit checks each part against a chosen size, but only helps when the destination accepts multiple PDFs. Image mode loses searchable text, forms, links and signatures.

Will compression change my document?
Image compression converts pages into JPG images inside a new PDF. Choose Preserve text and vectors when selectable text, links and vector content must remain; already compact PDFs may not shrink.
Why is my download the original?
If image compression does not reduce the file size, the tool offers your unchanged original instead. Text-based or already optimized files may not shrink.
