Split Scanned PDF Pages in Half — Reading Order

Turn two-page scanned spreads into single pages. Choose left/right or top/bottom cuts, keep a cover whole and check the reading order.

If one PDF page contains two facing book pages, splitting the file into page ranges leaves both book pages together. Halve PDF Pages instead cuts each selected page into two equal halves and places those halves on separate output pages.

Choose the direction from the page you see

Use Vertical · left then right for two pages side by side. Use Horizontal · top then bottom for pages stacked above one another. The tool needs upright pages; normalize rotated pages before starting and review the copy. It uses an equal middle cut, so it is not a good fit when a scan’s gutter is off-centre or content crosses the centre line.

Example: keep a cover and split two spreads

Suppose your PDF has three file pages: a single cover, followed by two double-page scans. Enter 2-3 under Pages, select the appropriate direction and leave Reverse the two halves off for normal left-to-right order. The cover passes through whole. Each selected scan becomes two pages, so the output has five pages: cover, first left, first right, second left, second right.

For a right-to-left book, Reverse the two halves puts the right half first within each selected spread. It does not reverse the order of the original PDF pages. Always compare the output against the intended reading sequence.

Process and review

  1. Open a valid, unencrypted PDF within 50 MB. Start with a short representative file when using a phone.
  2. Choose the cut direction and reading order, then enter the file-page range to cut. Leave it blank to cut every page.
  3. Run Halve pages and open the result preview. Check the middle edge for clipped text and compare consecutive pages for duplicates or omissions.
  4. Download a copy. If the input had N pages and you selected S pages, the output should have N + S pages.

This does not recognize text or redact content

Splitting a scanned image does not create searchable text. Use English OCR on the resulting copy if appropriate, then check recognition errors. Layout operations are not secure redaction. Keep source documents and review the result before sharing confidential material.

Different jobs need different tools

To separate an existing PDF into page groups, use Split PDF. To meet an attachment limit, use size-based splitting. To place several normal pages onto one sheet for printing, use Pages per sheet; that is the opposite layout task.

Document-level bookmarks, interactive fields, links, signatures and accessibility tags may not survive a new layout. This tool has no adjustable gutter, overlap setting or automatic blank-gutter detection. If the middle cut would damage content, use a tool with an adjustable cut rather than accepting an unreadable result.
