Resize PDF pages to A4 or US Letter

Change PDF page size to A4 or 8.5 x 11 inch Letter. Try measured examples, choose margins and distinguish paper dimensions from KB or MB file size.

To resize a PDF to A4 or US Letter, open Resize PDF Pages, choose the paper size and orientation, then review the downloaded copy. The tool fits page content proportionally rather than stretching it. It runs locally in your browser.

A4 and 8.5 x 11 are different paper sizes

A4 measures 210 × 297 mm. US Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches, or 215.9 × 279.4 mm. Letter is wider and shorter, so fitting a Letter page to A4 can leave blank space. Resizing PDF page dimensions is different from reducing a file to 200 KB or 2 MB. Use compression or size-based splitting when the requirement is measured in bytes.

Change PDF page size step by step

  1. Choose one valid, unencrypted PDF within 50 MB. Selected pages must be upright; the tool rejects pages with an existing rotation setting.
  2. Choose Paper size: A4, US Letter, A3, A5 or US Legal. Use Letter for 8.5 × 11 inches. Custom arbitrary dimensions are not supported.
  3. Choose Portrait or Landscape. Set Outer margin in millimetres; content is fitted within the remaining area.
  4. Leave Pages blank for all pages, or enter a range such as 2-3. Other pages retain their original dimensions.
  5. Select Resize PDF, preview and download. Inspect page edges, small text and any existing footer.

Measured example: Letter to A4

Download our two-page synthetic source PDF and the A4 output. We processed both pages using A4 portrait and a 10 mm outer margin with the same layout function used by the tool. The source has two 612 × 792 point Letter pages; the result has two 595.28 × 841.89 point A4 pages. The content remains proportionally fitted and the page count stays at two.

For the reverse direction, choose the A4 output as your input and select Letter portrait. Review the new copy rather than assuming every margin will match the first conversion. Use PDF Info to inspect page dimensions before and after. Read the example measurements.

What happens to text and interactive features?

The layout operation embeds page artwork without rasterizing it. This does not guarantee accessibility or preserve every document feature. Interactive fields, links, bookmarks, tags and digital signatures may not survive the rebuilt layout. Keep editable and signed originals and review an ordinary working copy first.

Choose resize, crop or pages per sheet

Cropping trims the visible page boundary. Resizing fits the visible page onto another paper size. N-up PDF places several source pages on one sheet. These solve different printing problems; a smaller paper size does not guarantee a smaller file in KB or MB.

For a document assembled from several sources, check every selected page size and orientation. Print a representative page at the intended settings before printing a long batch.
